Andrology & Sexual Health

Mohit
Khera, M.D., M.B.A., M.P.H., earned his
undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University.
He subsequently earned his Masters in Business
Administration and his Masters in Public Health
from Boston University. He received his Medical
Degree from The University of Texas Medical
School at San Antonio and completed his
Residency training in the Scott Department of
Urology at Baylor College of Medicine. After
finishing his residency, he completed a one year
fellowship in Male Reproductive Medicine and
Surgery with Dr. Larry Lipshultz. He is now an
Assistant Professor in the Scott Department of
Urology at Baylor College of Medicine and is
specializing in Male Infertility and Male and
Female Sexual Dysfunction.
Dr. Khera is an enthusiastic investigator in the
laboratory and an experienced writer, having
co-authored several book chapters with Dr.
Lipshultz, such as for the acclaimed Campbell’s
Urology textbook and in Clinical Gynecology. He
has also co-edited the most recent edition of
Urology and the Primary Care Practitioner. In
2006, he was awarded the American Urologic
Association and Pfizer Scholars Grant in the
amount of $70,000 to study erectile dysfunction.
In 2007 he was awarded an Auxilium
Pharmaceutical Grant in the amount of $83,000 to
study testosterone replacement therapy for
prostate cancer patients.

Ali
Massumi, M.D. |

Cardiology
|
Dr. Massumi is the director of the Center for Cardiac
Arrhythmias and Electrophysiology at St. Luke's
Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas, Dr.
Massumi is also a clinical professor of medicine
at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas,
and the program director of the Clinical Cardiac
Electrophysiology at St. Luke's Episcopal
Hospital. Dr. Massumi’s accomplishments include
being named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by
Texas Heart Institute/St. Luke's Episcopal
Hospital in 1983, 1988, and 1989; Outstanding
Faculty Member by Baylor College of Medicine in
1992; Best Doctor by Houston Metropolitan
magazine in 1993, and in 1994 he was awarded the
Texas Heart Institute Outstanding Attending
Physician Award.
Licensed to practice medicine in the state of
Texas, Dr. Massumi is board certified in
internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, and
clinical cardiac electrophysiology. He was
awarded the citation for Outstanding Graduate of
the Year. Dr. Massumi did his medical internship
and residency in internal medicine at Millard
Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, New York, where he
received the Dexter Levy's Award for Excellence
in Bedside Diagnosis. He completed his
cardiology fellowship at St. Luke's Episcopal
Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine in
Houston, Texas. He also did an affiliate
fellowship in electrophysiology and arrhythmia
surgery at Duke University in Durham, North
Carolina.
Dr. Massumi is a fellow of the American College
of Cardiology. He is also a member of North
American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology
and a founding member of the Houston
Electrophysiology Society. He is a member of the
American Heart Association, the American Medical
Association, and the Harris County Medical
Society. Fluent in English and Farsi (Persian),
he is the author or contributing author of 74
publications.
Dr. Massumi received his medical training and
medical degree from the Tehran University School
of Medicine in Tehran, Iran. He is an
interventional cardiologist and
electrophysiologist specializing in cardiac
rhythm disorders, radiofrequency catheter
ablation of cardiac arrhythmias, defibrillators,
pacemakers, coronary interventions, and mitral
valve balloon valvuloplasty.

James M.
Wilson, M.D. |

Cardiology |
Dr.
Wilson is a general cardiologist with special
expertise in coronary and peripheral vascular
interventions.
While training in cardiovascular disease at the
Texas Heart Institute, he performed research
exploring the origin of unstable coronary
syndromes, the use of antithrombotic therapy
during coronary intervention, appropriate
methods of revascularization, and the treatment
of coronary stent restenosis.
He currently holds an appointment as clinical
associate professor at the Baylor College of
Medicine. Dr. Wilson is also the director of
cardiology education at St. Luke’s Episcopal
Hospital/Texas Heart Institute and director of
clinical cardiology at St. Luke’s Episcopal
Hospital.
In addition to coronary atherosclerosis, his
interests include the use of pulmonary artery
input impedance in the evaluation of pulmonary
hypertension and the evaluation of ventricular
function in the setting of mitral regurgitation.

Cardiology |
Dr. Zacca is board certified in both internal medicine and
the internal medicine subspecialty board for
cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Zacca is an
associate professor of clinical medicine at
Baylor College of Medicine. He continues to
actively teach and mentor Baylor College of
Medicine medical students.
Dr. Zacca is a fellow of the American College of
Cardiology and the American Heart Association.
As an active clinician and researcher, he holds
three U.S. and international patents on
inventions relating to the field of angioplasty
in the cardiovascular system. He is a member of
the Houston Cardiology Society, Texas Medical
Association, Harris County Medical Society, and
numerous other professional societies.
Dr. Zacca earned his medical degree in 1971 from
the American University of Beirut in Beirut,
Lebanon.
Following his internship at the American
University Hospital in Beirut, he completed his
residency in internal medicine at Rutgers
Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey, and a
cardiology fellowship at Baylor College of
Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Zacca served as
the director of the Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratory at the Veterans Administration
Medical Center for Baylor College of Medicine.

Endocrinology |
Dr.
Rodriguez is board certified by the American Board of
Internal Medicine and the American Board of
Endocrinology, Dr. Rodriguez has a focus on
diabetes and metabolism. She has served as a
board member for the Texas State Council for
Osteoporosis and the United Medical Care Plan.
Dr. Rodriguez is a member of the American
Diabetes Association, American Association of
Clinical Endocrinologists, Endocrine Society,
Thyroid Foundation of American, American College
of Physicians, and numerous other professional
societies.
Dr. Rodriguez was born and
educated in Puerto Rico where she graduated from
the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine
in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1989.
After completing her internship and residency in
internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine
in Houston, Texas, Dr. Rodriguez completed her
fellowship in endocrinology at Baylor College of
Medicine in 1995. She then entered private
practice in Houston, Texas.
Although Dr. Rodriquez has developed her
practice based on the best technology today,
it’s her humanitarian warm heart and charismatic
personality that gives her patients the
confidence to return to a doctor who treats them
as people. Throughout her career, Dr. Rodriguez

Dr. Alford is an
internationally recognized otolaryngologist and
facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at The
Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. He is the
director of Alford ENT and Facial Plastic
Surgery and a member of Texas ENT Consultants.
A 1986 graduate of The University of Texas
Health Science Center in San Antonio, Dr. Alford
is an AOA honor member. He completed training in
Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery) in 1991
at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Head
and Neck Surgical Oncology/Facial Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery in 1992 at the University
of Michigan. Dr. Alford's fellowships include
surgery of the facial nerve, facial reanimation,
and advanced endoscopic surgery at the
University of Pittsburg and Shadyside Hospital
under the direction of Dr. Mark May in 1990. Dr.
Alford is certified both by the American Board
of Otolaryngology and the American Board of
Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Publishing more than 45 peer reviewed articles
in medical journals and book chapters, Dr.
Alford has also lectured throughout the United
States, Caribbean, and Central America. Dr.
Alford has served as president of the Texas
Society of Facial Plastic Surgery and an officer
of the medical staff of The Methodist Hospital
in Houston, Texas.
Every year since 1998, Dr. Alford has been
selected by his peers as "A Best Doctor in
Houston" and since 2000 as "A Best Doctor in
America." In 2006, the Houston Chronicle
selected Dr. Alford as "The Ultimate Plastic
Surgeon" in its annual issue on the Best of
Houston. He holds the rank of clinical assistant
professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He is
also active in local and national community
affairs and is a leader of the "Face to Face"
program, an effort by the American Academy of
Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to
match victims of domestic violence with a facial
plastic surgeon to provide pro bono
reconstructive surgery. Dr. Alford has appeared
on local and national television to talk about
domestic violence and has been a guest on The
Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, The
Discovery Health Channel, E!, and The Inquirer.
In 2006, Dr. Alford was the first recipient of
The Methodist Hospital Humanitarian Award for
his charitable work on survivors of domestic
violence and international medical missions. Dr.
Alford practices all aspects of Otolaryngology.
His particular expertise is in facial plastic
and reconstructive surgery, head and neck
surgical oncology, thyroid disease, and
minimally invasive surgery.

Gastroenterology
Chief Medical Officer |
Dr. Ertan earned his medical degree in 1963 from
the University of Ankara Medical School in
Turkey.
Following completion of his fellowship in
gastroenterology at the Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania in 1971, Dr. Ertan
worked at the University of Ankara Medical
School until 1980. From 1980 to 1991, he was
professor of medicine at the Tulane University
School of Medicine in New Orleans where he was
named chief of the Gastroenterology Section from
1984 to 1990 and interim chairman of medicine
from 1989 to 1990. From 1990 to 2000, Dr. Ertan
held the position of professor of medicine and
chief of the Gastroenterology Section at the
Methodist Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Ertan is clinical professor of medicine at
the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston,
Texas, and at the Weill Medical College of
Cornell University in New York, New York. Dr.
Ertan is also medical director of the Privilege
Care, LLC in Houston Texas.
Achieving national and international recognition
as an outstanding clinical scientist, educator,
researcher, and administrator in the field of
gastroenterology, Dr. Ertan has published over
150 articles in peer-reviewed journals, book
chapters and books. He has also received
numerous awards and honors.
Most recently, Dr. Ertan was chosen out of
250,000 Turkish Americans for his outstanding
contributions to society to receive the Turkish
American of the Year Award by the Assembly of
Turkish American Association in Washington, D.C.
Other honors include the Medicine Science Award
of 1992 by the Turkish Science and Technology
Research Assembly. In 1996, Dr. Ertan earned the
Best Physician Award by the Crohn's and Colitis
Foundation of America and the 2003 Distinguished
Clinician Award by the American Gastroenterology
Association (AGA). In October 2003, Dr. Ertan
received the Master in Gastroenterology Award
from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG)
and the fellow title by the AGA in 2007. Since
1995, Dr. Ertan has been named to the Top
Doctor's List in Houston, Texas, and the United
States.
Dr. Ertan has been active in various national
and international gastroenterology societies:
AGA's Education and Training Committee from 1994
to 1997, the International Liaison Committee
from 1999 to 2003, the ACG's International
Relations Committee as chair on the
International GI training Subcommittee from 1994
to 1998, and the Educational Affairs Committee
as chair from 1999 to 2001. He currently serves
on the editorial boards of six different medical
journals.

Wade R.
Rosenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S. |

General
Surgery |
A native of Houston, Texas, Dr. Rosenberg is
board certified in general surgery and the
founding partner and president of Texas Surgical
Associates (a surgical practice consisting of 16
board certified surgeons). He has been in
practice for more than 15 years and specializes
in general, laparoscopic, and vascular surgery.
With extensive experience with benign and
malignant pancreatic diseases, Dr. Rosenberg is
an expert in pancreatic, endocrine, complex
gastrointestinal and vascular surgery.
Earning his undergraduate degree at Emory
University in Atlanta, Georgia, and his medical
degree from the University of Texas Medical
School in Houston, Texas, Dr. Rosenberg
completed his general surgery residency at the
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He
completed his medical training by returning to
Houston for his vascular surgery fellowship at
Baylor College of Medicine. Mentored by Drs.
Paul Jordan and George Noon, he gained immense
experience early in his career.
Dr. Rosenberg has held academic appointments at
Baylor College of Medicine. In 2000, he was
awarded the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award
at Baylor College of Medicine, Department of
Surgery. In 2001, the Gulf Coast Chapter of the
Crolin's and Colitis Foundation recognized him
as the surgeon of the year. Dr. Rosenberg was
presented the Ruth Sterling Memorial Award by
The Living Bank International in 2006.
Founding the pancreas transplant program at The
Methodist Hospital, he performed the first
successful pancreas transplant in Houston. He
served as the surgical director for the pancreas
transplant program at The Methodist Hospital. He
was also the first surgeon to deploy an
abdominal aortic stem graft to treat an
abdominal aortic aneurysm at The Methodist
Hospital.
Elected by his peers to serve as deputy chief of
surgery at The Methodist Hospital, Dr. Rosenberg
subsequently served as the interim chief of
surgery. Often providing consultation for other
surgeons at The Methodist Hospital, he is widely
respected by his peers for performing the most
complex and difficult operations. His peers and
the nursing staff frequently refer their
relatives to him for their surgical care.
Currently, Dr. Rosenberg serves as president
elect of the medical staff of The Methodist
Hospital.
With a practice philosophy centering on the
welfare of his patients, Dr. Rosenberg’s goal is
to provide outstanding care. He strongly
believes in educating his patients and their
family members as well as the hospital staff
involved in their care. Excellent communication
is a cornerstone of his practice. Dr. Rosenberg

Dr. Haufrect has been in private practice at The
Methodist Hospital since 1977 and has served on
numerous committees including the Executive
Committee, the Obstetrics and Gynecology
Leadership Committee, the Operating Room
Committee, the Tissue and Cancer Committee, the
Emergency Room Committee, the Pharmacy and
Therapeutics Committee, the Radiation Committee,
and Transfusion Committee. He served as the
Chair of the Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Newborn
Quality Improvement Committee, The Obstetrics,
Pediatric Morbidity Committee, and the
Gynecologic Operating Room Committee.
Graduating with high honors, Dr. Haufrect
received his undergraduate degree at The
University of Texas at Austin while a member of
Phi Beta Kappa. He then earned his medical
degree at Baylor College of Medicine where he
was awarded Outstanding Student in Obstetrics
and Gynecology. He then completed his residency
at Baylor College of Medicine.
As a participant in the teaching programs at The
Methodist Hospital and Ben Taub General
Hospital, Dr. Haufrect was involved in the
education of both medical students and residents
at both hospitals since entering practice. He
has received the Outstanding Volunteer Faculty
Teaching Award from Baylor College of Medicine
for eight successive years.
For the past eight years, he has served as the
elected deputy chief of service and now as the
vice chair of the Department of Obstetrics and
Gynecology at The Methodist Hospital. As the
medical director of the Gynecology Operating
Rooms at The Methodist Hospital, the Gynecology
Service has been ranked among the top gynecology
services in the nation by U.S. News and World
Report each year.

C. Samo, M.D., F.A.C.P. |

Infectious Diseases |
Dr. Samo is board certified in internal medicine
and infectious diseases. He has his B.A. from
Rutgers University, medical degree from The
Chicago Medical School, and trained in internal
medicine and infectious diseases at Baylor
College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
In 1984, he started Infectious Diseases
Associates of Houston, which has grown to
include three other physicians: Drs. Victor
Fainstein, Mary Weinert, and Dipti Agrawal. This
group is involved with general infectious
disease consultations as well as special
interest in infections in transplant patients
and they have an active HIV practice. They have
extensive experience in diagnosing and treating
complex infectious disease cases and are
involved in cases referred from around the
world. Involved in the evaluation of new
treatment and diagnostic options for infections,
they have an active clinical research program
having participated in over 40 research studies
including HIV, anti-viral therapy, sepsis,
anti-fungal therapy, and hospital acquired
infections. Dr. Samo is a fellow of the American
College of Physicians and a fellow of the
Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Selected as one of the best physicians in
America and Houston multiple years in a row, Dr.
Samo has had a long-standing interest in the use
of computers in medicine. He is medical director
of Information Technology for The Methodist
Hospital and is involved in strategic planning,
product selection and implementation, and IT
policy direction for The Methodist Hospital
system.
Married with two children, Dr. Samo spends his
spare time with his family and enjoys exercising
and skiing.

Juan
Jose Olivero, M.D., F.A.C.P. |

Nephrology |
Dr. Olivero was
born in Guatemala, Central America, where he
graduated from the University of San Carlos
School of Medicine. He completed his internship
and residency in internal medicine at Baylor
College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
In 1975, Dr. Olivero completed his fellowship in
nephrology at Baylor College of Medicine and
joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine
as an assistant professor in the Department of
Internal Medicine. He was promoted to chief,
Section of International Medicine at Baylor
College of Medicine, in 1987. The Department of
Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine has
repeatedly recognized Dr. Olivero as an
outstanding educator.
Since 1977, he has served as a member of the
teaching staff at The Methodist Hospital, Ben
Taub General Hospital, and VAMC in the
Nephrology Section. Dr. Olivero was promoted to
clinical professor of medicine at Baylor College
of Medicine in 1996 and clinical professor of
medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at The
University of Texas in Houston, Texas, in 2003.
He is board certified by both the American Board
of Internal Medicine and the American Board of
Nephrology.
Dr. Olivero is a fellow of the American College
of Physicians and American Society of Internal
Medicine. He is a member of the National Kidney
Foundation, Renal Physicians Association,
American Society of Hypertension, Society of
Critical Care Medicine, and numerous other
professional societies. He is currently the
co-director of Davita Dialysis Medical Center.
A frequent lecturer at national and
international educational meetings, he has been
recognized as one of the Best Doctors in Houston
and Best Doctors in America many times from 1998
to 2006. Dr. Olivero is a fellow of the American
College of Physicians and American Society of
Internal Medicine. He is a member of the
National Kidney Foundation, Renal Physicians
Association, American Society of Hypertension,
Society of Critical Care Medicine, and numerous

Sermas, M.D. |

Neurology |
Dr. Sermas earned
his medical degree in 1978 from Baylor College
of Medicine.
Following completion of his neurology residency
at Baylor College of Medicine and fellowship in
electromyography and neuromuscular disorders at
the University of Virginia in Charlottesville,
Virginia, he joined Dr. Jack Alpert's private
practice in Houston, Texas.
Since 1984, Dr. Sermas has been an active staff
member at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and the
Texas Heart Institute. He is also a clinical
instructor for the Department of Neurology at
both Baylor College of Medicine and the
University of Texas Health Science Center.
As a clinical neurologist, Dr. Sermas is
actively involved in the diagnosis and
management of all neurological disorders; he is
a specialist in the diagnosis and management of
peripheral nerve and muscle disorders. Dr.
Sermas currently leads the largest single
specialty private neurology practice in the
Texas Medical Center. He and his associates have
received regular citations as a "Top Doc" and "Superdoc"
in various local, state, and national
publications.
Dr. Sermas is an active member of the American
Academy of Neurology, American Association of
Electrodiagnostic Medicine, Texas Neurology
Society, and numerous other professional
societies.

Weil, M.D., F.A.C.S., P.A. |

Neurosurgery |
Dr. Weil earned his
medical degree in 1984 from the University of
Texas Medical School.
Following completion of his neurosurgery
residency at University of Cincinnati Medical
Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, he returned to
Houston, Texas, to begin his private practice in
1990. Upon his return to Houston, he also joined
the clinical faculty of Baylor College of
Medicine as an assistant clinical professor of
neurosurgery.
Board certified by the American Board of
Neurosurgical Surgeons, he has served as an
instructor in skull base surgery and as an
American Board of Neurological Surgeons Review
Course Instructor. The Guide to Top Surgeons,
published by Consumers' Research Council of
America, has recognized him as a Top Surgeon and
the Guide to Top Doctors, published by Center of
the Study of Services, has recognized him as a
Top Doctor.
Dr. Weil has served as a board member for St.
Luke's Episcopal Hospital Executive Committee.
He is an active member of the American
Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress
of Neurological Surgeons, Texas Association of
Neurological Surgeons, Houston Neurology
Society, Texas Neurology Society, and numerous

Alejandro Preti, M.D., F.A.C.P. |

Oncology/Hematology |
Dr. Preti joined the faculty at
M.D. Anderson as an assistant professor of
medicine in the Department of Lymphoma. He also
served as the medical director for the
International Patient Center at M.D. Anderson
from 1994 to 1996. In 2002, he joined the
clinical faculty of Baylor College of Medicine
as a clinical assistant professor of medical
oncology. He remained a consultant in the
Department of Lymphoma-Myeloma at The University
of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center until
August 2005.
While currently running the Lymphoma-Leukemia-Myeloma
Program at The Methodist Hospital, he treats
patients with all types of malignant tumors. He
conducts a number of selected clinical trials
and is the principal investigator for the South
West Oncology Group at The Methodist Hospital.
Dr. Preti is an active participant in the
Thoracic Oncology Tumor Board and the
Gastrointestinal Tumor Board at Methodist and is
the medical director for the Oncology In-Patient
Unit at The Methodist Hospital in Houston. Board
certified in both internal medicine and medical
oncology, he is a fellow of the American College
of Physicians, a member of the American Society
of Clinical Oncology, and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dr. Preti obtained his medical degree from
Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Buenos
Aires in 1985.
He did his internship at CEMIC, Buenos Aires,
Argentina, in 1989 and his internal medicine
residency at Baylor College of Medicine in
Houston, Texas, in 1991. Dr. Preti completed a
fellowship in medical oncology at The University
of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 1994.

Mary
Green, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S. |

Opthalmology |
Dr. Green earned her doctorate in microbiology
from Tulane University in 1974 and medical
degree in 1982 from Baylor College of Medicine.
Following completion of her ophthalmology
residency at Baylor College of Medicine and
fellowship in cornea and anterior segment
surgery at the Louisiana State University Eye
Center in New Orleans, she opened her practice
in Houston, Texas.
Beginning her career as a researcher in the
Department of Ophthalmology, Estelle Doheny Eye
Foundation, University of Southern California
School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California,
Dr. Green later joined the faculty of Baylor
College of Medicine as an assistant professor in
the Departments of Ophthalmology (1976),
Microbiology and Immunology (1977), and Virology
Epidemiology (1986). She served as a clinical
assistant professor, Department of

Dr. Mathis specializes in Adult Reconstructive
Surgery with an emphasis on surgical treatment
of arthritis and joint replacement. He has
published chapters in books on revision total
hip surgery and osteoporosis, lectures
nationally and internally at medical meetings
and is involved in the research and design of
new technologies in joint replacement. He has
been named again as one of the “Best Doctors in
America”.

Dr. Reisman, a board certified plastic surgeon,
is interim chief of plastic surgery at St.
Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas, and
clinical professor of plastic surgery at Baylor
College of Medicine.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Reisman
graduated from Temple University School of
Medicine in 1973, continued his training in
general surgery, plastic surgery, and surgery of
the hand in Philadelphia, Virginia, Baltimore,
and Britain.
In 1993, he obtained his law degree and was
admitted to the Texas Bar specializing in
Physician Representation and Medico-Legal
Issues. He has more than 220 presentations and
articles both here and abroad on plastic

Dr. Bloom graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A.
in biochemistry from Princeton University in
Princeton, New Jersey. He graduated from
Stanford Medical School and completed his
internship and residency in Internal Medicine at
Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
In 1979, Dr. Bloom completed his fellowship in
Pulmonary Disease at Baylor College of Medicine
and joined the faculty of Baylor College of
Medicine as an assistant clinical professor in

Currently serving as director in the Intensive
Care Unit at Kindred Hospital in Houston, Texas,
Dr. Bloom is a member of The Methodist

Utilization and Formulary Committee. Dr. Bloom
has served as the director of the Pulmonary
Function Laboratory at The Methodist Hospital,

member of the executive committee for The
Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Mawad received his undergraduate education
at La Salle College, Beirut, Lebanon, where he
earned the Doctor of Medicine in 1976. After a
flexible internship at St. John's Episcopal
Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, he did his
diagnostic radiology residency at St. Luke's
Hospital Center in New York City, and a
neuroradiology fellowship at the Neurological
Institute of New York, Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Center in New York City.
Dr. Mawad is the professor and chair of the
Department of Radiology at Baylor College of
Medicine and director of BCM Neurovascular at
St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. In addition, he
is currently appointed as a professor in the
Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and
Ophthalmology. He serves as a Consulting
Radiologist at Baylor's affiliated hospitals as
well as at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson
Cancer Center. In 2001, he was named chair of
the Department of Radiology.
The immediate past-president of the World
Federation of Therapeutic and Interventional
Neuroradiology (WFITN), Dr. Mawad is a member of
the American Society of Neuroradiology, the
Radiological Society of North America, the
Harris County Medical Society, Texas Medical
Association, European Society of Neuroradiology,
the World Federation of Interventional and
Therapeutic Neuroradiology, American Society of
Head and Neck Radiology, and the American
Society of Interventional and Therapeutic
Neuroradiology.
With particular interest in the diagnosis and
treatment of strokes, both hemorrhagic and
ischemic, he has helped pioneer and develop
numerous techniques for the endovascular
treatment of intracranial aneurysms.
Endovascular techniques are minimally invasive
and offer an excellent viable alternative to
invasive "open surgery." Endovascular procedures
are much better tolerated by the patient and are
usually associated with a short recovery period.

Urology |
Dr. Miles earned his B.S. in engineering at
Michigan State University and both his M.S. in
engineering and his medical degree at the
University of Michigan. He received his surgical
and urologic training at Georgetown University
and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in
Washington, D.C.
In 1993, Dr. Miles joined the faculty of the
Scott Department of Urology at Baylor College of
Medicine and Urology Services at the Veterans
Affairs Medical Center where he was later
appointed professor in 2000. In 1994, he was
named chief of Urology Services at St. Luke's
Episcopal Hospital. He served as director of the
Urology Residency Program from 1995 to 2000, and
in 1998 he became clinical director of Baylor's
Prostate Gene Therapy Program.
Working with Timothy Thompson, Ph.D., principal
investigator of the SPORE (national grant) in
Prostate Cancer, he oversees use of gene therapy
in the management of prostate cancer. He has
served as president of the Houston Urologic
Society and was selected as one of the "best
doctors" in the United States in the 2001 to
2005 editions of America’s Top Doctors,
Castle-Connolly Medical Ltd. Dr. Miles was
appointed the Distinguished Cullen Chair in
Urology at Baylor College of Medicine in 2003.
Since 1999, he has served as the medical
director of the Texas Cancer Institute at St.
Luke's Episcopal Hospital.
After eight years as director of resident
education and director of urologic oncology in
the Department of Urology at Henry Ford Hospital
in Detroit, a teaching hospital of the
University of Michigan and clinical associate
professor of surgery at the University of
Michigan in Ann Arbor, Dr. Miles came to
Houston.
Since the beginning of his career, Dr. Miles has
been actively involved in scientific research.
He was investigator for the National Prostate
Cancer Project at Walter Reed Army Medical
Center from 1981 to 1982 and has participated
since 1984 as a principal investigator in the
Southwest Oncology Group studying cancer of the
adrenal gland, kidney, bladder, prostate, and
testes. Currently, he is director of the AUA
Outcomes Analysis Task Force and consultant for
the American Cancer Society for Development of
ACS "Screening" Criteria for Prostate Cancer.
Author of over 100 scientific papers and book
chapters, Dr. Miles worked with Dr. Peter
Scardino as associate editor of the landmark
textbook, Comprehensive Textbook of
Genitourinary Oncology. Dr. Miles has traveled
widely as an invited lecturer and consultant on
prostate cancer and decision analysis in the
management of prostate disease, and he is
working on a means of measuring "quality of
life" in prostate cancer patients.

Dr. Baxter earned his medical degree from
Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, in 1970.
Following his internship and internal medicine
residency training at Wilmington Medical Center
in Wilmington, Delaware, he served as the chief
of hospital services for the United States Air
Force Hospital/Osan Air Force Base in Osan,
Korea. Dr. Baxter continued his service as chief
of medical services at the United States Air
Force Hospital/Plattsburgh Air Force Base in
Plattsburgh, New York, and as a staff internist
at Wilford Hall Medical Center/Lackland Air
Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He joined the
teaching faculty as a clinical instructor for
the University of Texas Health Science Center in
San Antonio, Texas.
Upon relocating to Houston in 1978, Dr. Baxter
joined the teaching faculty of Baylor College of
Medicine as a clinical instructor and opened his
internal medicine practice. In 1985, he was
promoted to clinical assistant professor within

internal medicine and has been recognized as one
of the top doctors in America by Castle Connolly
& Associates and Top Internist in Houston by
Texas Monthly magazine.
Since 2001, Dr. Baxter has served as the

Born in England, Dr. Vicroy moved to the United
States when she was six years of age. She

University in Shreveport. In 1984, she graduated
from Washington University School of Medicine

medicine at Parkland Hospital in Dallas (UTHSCD)
and at University of California, San Diego, she

Ms. Miles has over 20 years experience working
with leading healthcare organizations and
physician groups. She most recently served as
Vice President for Ambulatory Operations at
Baylor College of Medicine. During her tenure at
Baylor she was the senior executive responsible
for overseeing the design and construction of
Baylor’s first adult ambulatory patient care
facility, The Baylor Clinic which opened in
June, 2005.
Prior to joining Baylor, she was employed by
Ernst & Young as a senior manager responsible
for the design and delivery of multi-million
dollar post merger integration projects that
involved redesign of both organizational
structure and operations. Representative clients
include University of Florida and Shands
University Hospital (Gainesville & Jacksonville,
Florida), Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center
(New York, New York), Norton Healthcare
(Louisville, Kentucky), Catholic Health
Initiatives (Franciscan Health System)
(Seattle/Tacoma) and Hospital Corporation of
America (Columbia/HCA) (Nashville).
Ms. Miles began her career in healthcare as a
member of Henry Ford Healthcare System’s
management team in 1984. Initially she worked as
an Operations Analyst and subsequently served in
a variety of roles during her tenure with the
organization. She was promoted to the position
of Administrator, Specialty Services for the
Fairlane Ambulatory Care Center in 1988. During
the next 3 years, she managed the addition of
90,000 square feet of clinical space and
redesign and renovation of the initial clinical
space (150,000 square feet).
Renee has an undergraduate degree in Industrial
and Systems Engineering (B.S.I.E) and completed
her graduate studies in finance and accounting,
earning a Masters of Business Administration
with distinction from the University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor in1992.
Ms. Miles was contacted approximately 18 months
ago by a group of leading physicians in the
Texas Medical Center who were interested in
developing a new product for consumers that had
grown weary of the complicated mess that the
healthcare delivery system had become. Intrigued
by both their vision and the chance to possibly
create a new business model that would serve
both consumers and physicians, she began the
long process of transforming this initial vision

Ms. Zepeda has more than 11 years experience in
the EMS and medical field. She spent five years
with the Houston Fire Department as a
firefighter/EMT handling several on-scene 911
responses. Her most recent position was with the
Michael DeBakey Heart Center at Methodist
Hospital in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care
Unit (CVICU) where she served as a clinical
mentor guiding new nurses in the unit. She also
aided in continuing Methodist’s Magnet status by
performing evidence-based practices in the unit
to aid in better practices and education.
Ms. Zepeda received her Bachelor’s Degree from
the University of Texas-Houston Health Science
Center. She served on the Student Government
Board as a representative for her class and
earned her CCRN in 2005. She is currently Chief
Operating Officer (COO) for Privileged Care –
Houston, LLC. Her vision is to aid in finding
the best care for consumers without the hassle
involved with today’s medical constraints.

Mrs. King possesses over 20 years of
experience in the Health Care Industry,
particularly at Baylor College of Medicine. Upon
graduating from Southwest Texas State University
(now Texas State) with a Bachelors of Science in
Health Care Management and Psychology, Rima
began her career as a technician in the In-Vitro
Fertilization unit of OB/GYN, Baylor College of
Medicine. Within a few months, Rima was
recruited by The Scott Department of Urology to
assist Peter T. Scardino, M.D. As a successful
administrative and projects coordinator, Rima’s
role in the department continued to expand while
providing support to a busy surgeon/professor
who went on to become the Departmental Chair.
Promoted to Administrative Associate II., Rima
succeeded in assuming many responsibilities
ranging from the day-to-day operations of five
intradepartmental units to staff development and
training. One of her most challenging
responsibility was the administrative and
financial management of a $20 million cancer
research grant (SPORE), the first of its kind as
a combined effort of many College wide research
and clinical units. The department of Urology
was awarded this grant for 3 consecutive years
during Rima’s tenure.
Working closely with the Chairman, Mrs. King
helped establish a Development Campaign and fund
raising program, assisted with academic reviews,
and the publication and management of a
strategic plan. Other accomplishments include
the support and management of educational videos
and textbooks, CME accreditation and Urologic
Society program meetings. She enjoyed her role
as the media relations and public affairs
liaison, and especially enjoyed organizing
volunteer efforts for the Bob Dole
cancer-screening booth during the Republican
National Convention in Houston.
Currently, Rima works with Brian Miles, M.D.,
Urologic Surgeon, as a Research Coordinator III
in the Scott Department of Urology at Baylor.

Ms. Waughtal received her Bachelor’s Degree from
the University of Texas at Austin and her
Master’s Degree from the University of Southern
California. She began her social work career in
1992 at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson
Cancer Center. As a member of the medical team,
she assessed the needs of patients and provided
them with the appropriate service. Services
included counseling, discharge planning and
community referral. She was voted outstanding
team member for the Department of Social Work
and won the team player award in the Medical
Breast Oncology Clinic at the University of
Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She has also
worked with older adults and individuals with
long-term mental illness.

Vivian is a 1998 graduate of Texas Woman’s
University. Since graduating as a surgical
nurse, Vivian has been employed by St. Luke’s
Episcopal Hospital in the operating room. She
has recently accepted a new position in
Operating Room Education. Vivian is currently
applying to graduate school. She has been
involved in several mission trips, and very much
enjoys operating on underprivileged children in
